All About Moving Insurance

By USInsurance.com

When moving there is always the possibility that damage may occur to some of your belongings. Of course, no one wants to think that anything will be broken but it is better to be safe than sorry later and for that you will need moving insurance.

The first thing you need to take into consideration is that, while the moving companies do insure your items, the amount that they will pay for damage is actually pretty minimal. They are only required to pay a small amount per pound of your household items. Obviously, if your flat screen TV is dropped and damaged, you are not going to be able to get it fixed or replaced based on its weight. The base insurance that is offered by moving companies is simply not enough to compensate for most losses. Laws concerning a moving companies' insurance requirements vary, so be sure and check into how much they are going to pay you if something happens.

You will need to realistically evaluate just how much your belongings are worth. You will need to know this in order to know just how much insurance you need. Remember, the actual value of any item is not the same as the replacement value. As soon as you take anything out of the store where you bought it, it devalues. And the actual value of everything decreases with every year you own it. If you want to be able to buy a replacement for any item that is broken or lost during moving, you need to factor in the replacement costs.

If you have items that have extraordinary value, such as antiques, art collections, furs or the like, they need extra insurance and you should obtain insurance quotes for these items. It is also a very good idea to take photos of them before they are packed for the move. Not only does this provide proof that you owned them, but it also clearly shows the condition they were in right before the move. Don’t pack these photos for moving with the moving truck, keep them with you. Heaven forbid the truck is wrecked and the photos are lost along with your things!

It is very possible that your homeowners insurance policy will also cover your moving insurance. Once you know just how much money your items are worth, contact them about this. If you don’t have homeowner’s insurance, or they can’t help you, a simple online search will provide you with companies that can give you insurance for the move. Be sure to shop around for insurance quotes with numerous companies.

It is your responsibility to make sure that your possessions are protected. Obtaining insurance for moving is often overlooked, and then regretted later. You worked hard to get the possessions that you have, so doesn’t it make sense to protect them while you are moving? Hopefully nothing will be lost or damaged at all, but doesn’t it make sense to be safe now rather than sorry when you have arrived at your new home?
