Follow These Tips Before You Switch Your Car Insurance
By USInsurance.com Staff
Sometimes even with the most thorough research, you pick an auto insurance plan that just doesn’t work out. Or it may be that you are moving or happen to get rid of your car that you no longer need your plan. Or it could be that you found a better plan or premium. Whatever the case may be, you will have to switch providers.
Look through the new policy very carefully. Don’t sign anything until re-read and understand the intricacies of the insurance policy. You want to be 100 percent sure that the plan you are getting provides with similar (and hopefully) better coverage and services than your current auto insurance plan. You also want to evaluate the new policy and their ratings, timeliness for paying premiums, their claims process and rates.
Give them sufficient notice. Regardless if you found the best plan for your car, you provide sufficent notice to your current provider. In general, you should be able to cancel your plan at any time, but you should do so in writing as well as by calling the auto insurance company. If you don’t you might be affected with additional fees, or worse, it can ruin your credit history/credit scores.
Don’t just cancel. With respect to giving your auto insurance sufficient notice, make sure that you don’t cancel. Doing so may mean that you are responsible for the next month’s payments and may affect your chances of obtaining auto insurance in the future. Again, this can all be avoided if a plan is cancelled in a timely manner.
Read through the cancellation request. Once you receive a cancellation request, make sure you read it through carefully – noting any cancellation fees.
Make sure there is no lapse or gap in coverage. When switching to a new insurance provider, make sure that there is no gap in between your car insurance policies. Be sure to coordinate the effective starting date of your new policy with the termination date of your old policy. The last thing you want is to get in an accident during a time when you are in-between policies.
